A young couple walks into a jewelry store in search of matching platinum wedding hands. From what they've heard about platinum's strength and durability, they are certain that its the  metal they want to represent their lifelong commitment. Because of its rarity, high purity, and metallurgical properties, they incorrectly assume that platinum is so hard that it cannot be scratched.

That young couple, and many consumers like them, are in for a surprise when the jeweler tells them that platinum does, in fact, scratch...sometimes quickly. So is there anything that can be done to improve the situation on the manufacturing end?
